On November 20th, John Rex Elementary proudly hosted its first-ever Scarecrow Contest, a celebration of creativity, sustainability, and community spirit. Over the course of two weeks, students from Kindergarten-4th grade classes worked diligently to design and build their own scarecrows using recycled materials. Along the way, they also learned about the fascinating history of scarecrows and their role in agriculture, sparking both their imagination and environmental awareness.
The final projects were truly impressive! Each scarecrow was a unique expression of creativity, showcasing the students' thoughtfulness, ingenuity, and dedication. From whimsical designs to more intricate, theme-based creations, the scarecrows were not only fun to look at but also thoughtfully constructed, demonstrating the incredible talent of our young artists.
To add an extra layer of excitement to the event, we were delighted to have a group of community partners join us to tour our garden and help choose the winners of the contest. Representatives from Lowe’s Home Improvement, Sailor and the Dock, Class 101, the Oklahoma City Zoo, OK Beautiful, K20 Center, and Earth Rebirth came together to celebrate the students' hard work and cast their votes for the most impressive scarecrows.
As a special reward for their creativity and hard work, the top seven winning classes will celebrate their success with a fun Hot Chocolate and Cookie Party—an exciting way to cap off this memorable experience!
We are so proud of the students for their hard work and creativity, and grateful for the support of our community partners who made this event a memorable success. The scarecrow contest not only brought our school together but also helped foster a deeper appreciation for recycling, teamwork, and local engagement.
We can't wait to see what our students come up with next year!
