What makes a lesson memorable?

Often, it is the moment when students realize, “This actually matters.”

At John Rex, relevance is an important part of how we think about teaching and learning. Students certainly need strong academic foundations. They also need opportunities to apply what they know.

That can happen through projects, problem-solving, collaboration, creative work, presentations, experiments, and authentic challenges.

Instead of seeing math, science, literacy, technology, and the arts as completely separate subjects, students can begin to understand how knowledge works together.

That approach becomes increasingly important as students prepare for a world in which the ability to think, communicate, adapt, and solve problems will matter as much as the ability to recall information.

Our goal is not simply to help students answer questions on an assignment.

We want them to become people who know how to ask good questions, find solutions, work with others, and keep learning.

That is the kind of learning students can carry with them long after a lesson ends.
