No two students begin the school year in exactly the same place.
That is why one of our biggest priorities at John Rex is academic growth.
Achievement matters, but growth tells another important part of the story. It helps us ask: How much is each student learning? Where are they gaining momentum? Where might they need additional support or a greater challenge?
Throughout the year, teachers use classroom work, observations, assessments, and tools such as NWEA MAP Growth to better understand student progress.
The data itself is not the destination.
It is information that helps educators make better decisions.
Teachers can identify skills students are ready to tackle, specialists can provide targeted support, and students can begin to understand their own learning in a more meaningful way.
Most importantly, growth reminds us that learning is not about comparing one child to another.
It is about helping every student move forward.
Sometimes that progress happens quickly. Sometimes it requires persistence, additional support, and another approach.
Either way, we want students to experience the satisfaction of being able to look back and say:
“I can do something today that I couldn't do before.”
That is growth.
